I sent a large chunk of money to a friend via cashier's check drawn on First Tech Credit Union here in Portland. An institution that has thousands of members, most of whom are employees of Nike and Intel and is affiliated with several other Credit Unions that are just as big, if not larger. Out of desperation to get it cashed because her bank is completely online, she went to Sawbucks and their totally bonkers 18% check cashing fee. They called my credit union, confirmed that the cashier's check was good but refused to cash it calling both my friend and my Credit Union "shady."
