Have unsuccessfully tried to get a mortgage broker on a call, nor do they return your call when the call center takes your contact information. Also had two terse, rude operators at their call center. Strongly considering closing all of my accounts, PenFed has suffered from terrible customer service in the last year or so.
Disappointed & Frustrated. Been a member for over 20 years. Had several family & relatives join, over the years, a few military & Veterans. Most have taken their financial business to Navy or USAA, even TD Bank! Due to the poor PenFed service, and outdated IT systems. While PenFed hired the highly regarded professional Andrea McCarren as the “Vice President & Chief Content Officer PenFed Digital” the awesome marketing done by her can come across as somewhat of a facade. As those excellent efforts only cover up what is supported by an outdated system, of what seems to be a financial institution rebuilding its’ foundation on the backs of PenFed members. Quality & efficiency of PenFed services have eroded over the past few years. Several years ago PenFed built their $161 Million HQ in Tysons. At that time PenFed was scared; as USAA opened a Financial Center by Tiffany & Co a few miles away, and numerous USAA financial centers nationwide. Penfed tried to compete w USAA with a flat screen & phone in lieu of a teller, failed. And weakly expanding other services. PenFed Absolutely ineffective during the FedGov Furlough. Many horror stories from other PenFed members during a stressful time for many. Sad that Wells Fargo was immediately responsive to help FedGov employees on furlough, & PenFed was like a circus spinning members from Dept To Dept to obtain help during a temporary financial hardship. Branches now oddly designed like space age, maybe copying Capital One Café? But the layout is confusing to make a deposit inside with a teller, or see someone about a Loan app, at a few of the branches. Only a couple of tellers, no drive thru, and many of the space age desks sit empty with no staff to help PenFed Members And forget about making a cash deposit at a PenFed branch ATM. Cash is NOT posted instantly like all other financial institutions. “We’re working on it” Same IT System since 1995! Their back office computer Service System is antiquated, always overloaded on the first of any month, causing “not authorized” merchant terminal responses. “Our back office systems aren’t communicating with some merchant systems right now” ???? Whether in DC, Northern Virginia, or in beautiful San Diego CA. Very embarrassing not to be able to complete a simple purchase, or a basket full of groceries, because PenFed System is so antiquated. Phone Rep can’t help. Unacceptable. Their system still doesn’t recognize other CU partner ATMs. And their Customer Service reps won’t issue refunds for nuisance ATM fees. They don't care for their members, all they care about is attempting to catch up to Navy Federal & USAA. By adding fees to everything. PenFed Changed their checking Account structure, adding fees & new unique requirements to avoid fees. They cut back the staff, eliminated ATM fee refund. PenFed app not updated & website antiqued. Just recently “streamlined” online signing from their 20 year old interface. Still don’t have Zelle! They “wire” funds like it’s 1994. Very cumbersome. Though their staff may try, and are friendly & helpful, very Scripted responses. PenFed staff not encumbered, nor empowered, to make basic decisions when helping a member for an immediate resolution for issues at hand. Seriously considering moving my financial affairs out, like my many family members, & relatives did, due to the poor systems & inadequate service PenFed now provides. Very disappointed after being a PenFed Member for over 20 years, due to a lack of integrity PenFed once had when I initially joined.
Wow! I would have never thought that Penfed was this awful. I've been a member for several years and only conducted banking with them. Alas, I decided to get a home mortgage and boy I wish I'd known how awful Penfed is in the mortgage department. Members please beware of the terrible process you'll endure if you seek to apply for a mortgage with PenFed. I was met with my online application having to be completed twice, the loan officer doesn't communicate, the customer service department doesn't have a clue. Please do yourself a favor a really think twice before applying for a mortgage loan with Penfed.
Penfed is the most disorganized and unresponsive company I have ever dealt with. I applied for mortgage 3 weeks ago & no reply...I called them 7or 8 times, always the same. Member services rep says they will transfer me to a mortgage consult, they put me on hold, then come back saying "all reps are busy, someone will call back later." No one ever calls. This has been a waste of time. I should have chosen another bank.
Great customer service. I went to get a car loan and was a helped a great deal. Karlene Toruno was amazing and helped us a lot to get the loan approved. Keep up the good work !
