The "Norwegian Church" is well worth a stop for anyone visiting Washington Island. It is just a short walk from the parking area, and is absolutely worth it. The structure is like nothing I have seen before. Exploring inside and out was very interesting. I think that anyone interested in architecture, history, or other cultures would enjoy a visit.
A bit hard to find; but well worth it. This church/temple is a structure of spirituality and power. It is, most definitely, a beautiful building that was lovingly built by true craftsmen. As a long time carpenter, I was amazed at the skill and materials that were necessary in building this landmark. A most photogenic place on an island that makes you glad you have a digital camera, as you will find yourself wanting to take multiple pictures from all angles inside and out. No bathrooms or other amenities, just an awesome (I don't use that word lightly) place with a high wow factor. You can let your imagination run and visualize Odin marrying Frigga here. There is also a nice birding trail that takes you into the surrounding woods. If you find yourself on Washington Island make sure you visit this astonishing place. There is no fee to go there.
Beautiful replica of a Norwegian church. We heard the story of its inception from some locals and it made it even more charming. This church was built by a community effort and its stunning. If you are visiting Washington Island this is a must see.
Very beautiful church. The dedication put into it by the volunteer builders is very evident. Also the locals said to look for the hanging tool belt dedicated to a volunteer who unfortunately passed away while building it.
What a super cool piece of history! We stopped the last time we were in Door County. My favorite part was the Bible illustrated by Salvador Dali, how cool is that!
